As a freshman, he was rumored to be the most lethal competitor Adam had seen in the three years since creating the Circle. Beginning his sophomore year, Travis was unbeatable. Together, Travis and Shepley easily paid their rent and bills with the winnings. Adam brought the bullhorn to his mouth once again, and the yelling and movement escalated to a feverish pace.
Eastern's star varsity wrestler, Marek Young! Cheering ensued, and the crowd parted like the Red Sea when Marek entered the room. A circular space cleared, and the mob whistled, booed and taunted the contender. He bounced up and down and rocked his neck back and forth, his face severe and focused. The crowd quieted to a dull roar, and my hands shot to my ears when music blared through the large speakers on the other side of the room. Shake in your boots, boys, and drop your panties, ladies!
The volume exploded when Travis appeared in a doorway across the room. He made his entrance, shirtless, relaxed and unaffected. He strolled into the center of the circle as if he were showing up to another day at work. Lean muscles stretched under his tattooed skin as he popped his fists against Marek's knuckles. Travis leaned in and whispered something in Marek's ear, and the wrestler struggled to keep his stern expression.
Marek stood toe to toe with Travis, and they looked directly into each other's eyes. Marek's expression was murderous; Travis looked mildly amused. The men took a few steps back, and Adam sounded the horn. Marek took a defensive stance, and Travis attacked. I stood on my tiptoes when I lost my line of sight, leaning from side to side to get a better view. I inched up, sliding through the screaming crowd.
Elbows jabbed into my sides, and shoulders rammed into me, bouncing me back and forth like a pinball. The tops of the fighers' heads became visible, so I continued to push my way forward. When I finally reached the front, Marek grabbed Travis with his thick arms and tried to throw him to the ground.
When Marek leaned down with the motion, Travis rammed his knee into Marek's face. Before Marek could shake off the blow, Travis lit into him, his fists making contact with Marek's bloodied face over and over. I turned just in time to see Marek land a solid punch. Travis turned, and for a moment I thought he had dodged another blow, but he made a complete circle, crashing his elbow straight into the center of Marek's nose.
Blood sprayed my face, and splattered down the front of my cardigan. Some of the techniques listed in Beautiful Disaster may require a sound knowledge of Hypnosis, users are advised to either leave those sections or must have a basic understanding of the subject before practicing them.

Loved each and every part of this book. I will definitely recommend this book to romance, new adult lovers. In reality, a guy like this would be someone to avoid at all costs.
But in fiction-land, Travis's over-the-top devotion to the woman he loves seems romantic and intense. Travis and Abby have one dysfunctional relationship, but it's compelling and tragically perfect. The title "Beautiful Disaster" truly does apply. Travis is a hot stud who happens to be a fight club champion without lifting a weight, spending a second training, and all while consuming copious amounts of booze. Abby is so stunningly beautiful and desirable that every guy she meets hits on her or tries to assault her, mostly so that Travis can react possessively.
Add in her ability to hustle poker like a professional gambler and she's beyond unrealistic. The entire Las Vegas plotline is very unbelievable and unnecessary. Much of the plot serves simply as a series of reasons Abby and Travis can't be together, none of them making any sense at all.
And I won't spoil the ending, but any last attempt at realism flies right out the window. All of this complaining makes it seem like this book is horrible. The problem is that it's not. I did skim the middle and found myself skipping to the end just to get past Round 33 of Abby breaking Travis's heart. But like I said, Travis is a romantic figure in the vein of Heathcliff and this saved the book from being unreadable. All ready I'm not making sense.
I picked up this book from NetGalley because of all the hilarious negative reviews on it. I figured since it was free, why not try my hand and see if I can add anything to the discussion. I probably can't. This book has been called disgusting, romantic, ugly, addicting. It's all of those things. The basic premise of this crap is that Abby loses a bet and has to move in with Travis for a month. Which is fine and dandy, but WTF they start sharing a bed. There is no way in hell a normal girl would do this.
A girl with a fucking brain would not do this. And Abby seems to be normal at the beginning of the book - I mean, her and her best friend won't go to parties alone. Travis is fucking scary. He dictates where Abby sleeps, what she wears, when she eats, who she hangs out with and when, where she goes, and who is allowed to talk to her.
He beats the piss out of people on a regular basis, outside of the ring. Inside the ring is a different story. There are plenty of pro fighters out there who are decent people. That's right. Most of this disgusting, inexcusable shit has happened when they were only friends.
But none of this fuckery would even be if Abby listened to herself and not her shit stain of a 'best friend. The idiot who kept pushing Nora towards the enemy and kept putting them both in danger? Well Vee looks like a right Girl Scout next to America. For instance, Travis just beat a guy to a bloody pulp. But America pushes Abby to go to Travis and talk to him. Some friend. This happens over and over again. Abby is a total shit, too, but I just can't even.
Also, there was no plot to speak of. A relationship between two dolts does not a plot make. There were little wisps of plots here and there, with the fight club thing, and the trip to Vegas to save Abby's dad from a debt owed to a mobster.
That last bit? Could have been a sweet ass book. But it was never talked to or mentioned after that; the only purpose it served was to give the couple a reason to fight. Finally, what I thought could be a redeeming quality ended up being just as banal and stupid as everything else: the sex scenes. Travis is the hottest guy in town, with sexual prowess unmatched by any other student at Eastern.
There is no foreplay or anything. They are so vanilla and boring that I just skimmed them after the third one because blah. Also, the night Abby loses her virginity, she gets her hymen plowed to dust and there is no pain, no blood, nothing. Come on, that does not happen in real life. Not all hope is lost though. The writing was a lot better than I expected, I have to say. I think some of the name choices were dumb, though Abby Abernathy - really?
Come on, now. It wasn't the most beautiful and evocative piece ever written, obviously, but it was easy to read, and really was addicting. This page book was quick to read, I read it in a day. So while it was maddening, it didn't totally suck. Just the message and the characters. I couldn't recommend this book to anyone. I want to be clear that this is not a Young Adult book, but it has been marketed as such and that's why it made it to my blog. I can't recommend it to young adults because it sends ALL the wrongs messages.
I can't recommend it to adults because A I don't like seeing the stupidity surrounding heroes like Travis Twi-moms, anyone? It was addicting and easy to read, but it really sends a terrible message to all who read it, and honestly there's not even a plot to enjoy. Read at your own risk. I know that this book should make me mad because Abby and Travis' relationship is as the character Kara states a "disaster". It's really not all that healthy, the back and forth, the aggression etc I have read it a couple of times and it is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine.
I am a fan of Jamie McGuire books! Travis "Mad Dog" Maddox needs to be real! Maybe I can scout my campus for him ; Underground fighting rings here I come! Abby Abernathy is trying to change her life, and moves away to attend Eastern University to get away from her past. But does she get away from her past life? Not a chance. Abby Abernathy runs into Travis "Mad Dog" Maddox and goes from being his "friend" to his "everything" in not time flat.
Okay, exaggeration there. It's obvious how much they both want each other. Abby is hiding a secret, Travis has a problem. Mix those two deliciously gossip worthy things together and you get one fabulously delivered Beautiful Disaster. Abby, Abby, Abby Daddy issues at that.
That's all bad. I really loved this book. The relationship between Abby and Travis is beyond crazy. This is one dysfunctional relationship that seems to need AND rely on problems to survive.
If it's not one thing, it's another. Travis ain't no walk in the park either, mind you. Travis is a fighter, he's got mommy issues.
Perfect match, eh? He's the "tough" guy, the "don't-fuck-with-him-or-his-woman" kinda guy or you get the living shit beat out of you. Aside from their crazy relationship, I really liked these two.
I feel that, yeah they were cray cray, but they totally fit together. All you girls, don't sit there and be all "Ana, WTF is you talking about? You've been in a relationship of some sort, where you Just. You keep going back for more. Reading Beautiful Disasters the song that's playing in my head aside from the rowdy crowd noises during a cage fight.
And that's how I see Abby and Travis. I also liked the other characters, Abby's best friend America and her boyfriend Travis' cousin Shep , as well as Travis' dad and brothers. I think all characters were well developed and they were all believable. Makes me want to go out and pinpoint all the Travis's and Abby's in my life.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. Definitely for a mature audience. If you love yourself a contemporary romance with bruised hearts that need major fixing then this book is definitely for you. I've seen this book floating around for a while now, both in print and ebook, and finally I couldn't pass it up anymore.
I devoured this page book in a couple of hours. I yelled at and was downright mean to anyone who interrupted me. Abby is a "good girl" who is trying to escape a troubled past. The last thing she needs is a buzz cut, tattooed, underground fighting, playboy chasing after her. She knows Travis is a bad idea; everyone tells her he will use her and break her heart.
Travis is convinced they can just be friends. And then a bet is made that will change their lives forever. Jamie McGuire has created one wild ride of an emotional train wreck that is nothing short of amazing.
The sexual tension in Abby and Travis's relationship and the build up between the two kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. They hated each other, the were bffs, they liked each other, they were just friends, and they hated each other again.
By the time I finished this book I was tired My emotions had just gotten off of a roller coaster. Travis and Abby weren't the only awesome characters of this book. I loved the part that America and Shepley played.
They were the perfect foil to Travis and Abby's instability. These two are quite a pair. Are they the perfect characters or even the perfect couple? Can these two young men somehow move beyond Corey's past and Ian's pain to embrace a love they both so desperately desire?
Derek Amato's reflections in My Beautiful Disaster provide rare insight into what people with extraordinary gifts see, think, feel and do; pose questions about the potential to tap into previously undetected abilities and spotlight the 'silent epidemic' of head trauma.
His experiences also make vivid some the challenges faced by those living with autism and other neurological disorders and hint at the possibility we all have more in common than we think. Readers enchanted by autistic savant, Daniel Tammet's eloquent Born On A Blue Day, will welcome another multi-layered, first person account of what is to live with a remarkable condition.
Uniquely, having spent his life as a neurotypical Amato's tale relates the before and after of 'the gift'; his voice at times resonating with incredulity at what has happened and what the eventual cost may be. This is a passionate collection of free-verse poems written through a perspective that time, love, fate, pain, fear, and patience play characters in our lives.
These characters teach us in life through heated experiences and give us nuggets of wisdom in self-reflections, once we listen! She wrote her lessons in poems. Interweaving biblical insights and personal narratives, this eloquently written book shows how God often uses suffering and desert experiences to form us into Christ's image.
Marlena Graves shares her experiences of growing up poor in a house plagued by mental illness as a means to explore the forces God uses to shape us into beautiful people in the midst of brokenness. This book offers a window into suffering through the motif of desert spirituality, revealing how God can use our painful experiences to show himself faithful. While no one welcomes suffering, God often uses desert experiences--those we initially despise and wouldn't wish on anyone--to transform us into beautiful souls who better resemble Jesus.
Graves shows how God can bring life out of circumstances reeking of death and destruction, whether those circumstances are crises or daily doses of quiet desperation. Readers who have experienced suffering and question God's purpose for it will benefit from this book, as will counselors, pastors, professors, and mentors.
This book is my story and journey from dealing with many things in life we sometimes don't like to speak on but live with, this is my transition from strife to triumph. Although I am still a work in progress I am loving the growth of who I am becoming, learning to not let life not break me but make me stronger and wiser.
I hope that this book can too help others whom may have possibly gone through similar issues or if they just need some motivation to dust yourself off and readjust your crown.
